Incident/Accident Procedure

There are two main requirements for dealing with an incident/accident during Club activities:

Being prepared to take immediate action

and

Keeping a record afterwards
Club emergency procedures should help all Club Coaches and helpers cope with any incidents/accidents as calmly and quickly as possible, and prevent further incidents/accidents occurring at the same time.
Every incident/accident should be recorded as soon as possible afterwards, while people are still clear what happened. There are two reasons for recording and keeping this information: it may be used to identify problems and prevent similar incidents/accidents happening again and it provides documented evidence of what happened for use at a later date.
Having an incident/accident report book makes sure that essential information is recorded. The book should be completed by the main person who dealt with the incident/accident. The book is kept in the Club House.
In the event of an incident/accident a member of the Committee should be contacted as soon as possible.


The following points summarise Carlisle Canoe Club Guidelines for dealing with an incident/accident during Club activities.

 

o Stay calm but act swiftly and observe the situation. 
o Consider any further danger to the casualty and/or yourself.
o Respond to reduce any immediate danger to the casualty.
o Listen to what the injured person is saying.
o Alert a first aider who should take appropriate action in line with their training for minor injuries.
o In the event of an injury requiring specialist treatment, call the emergency services.
o Deal with the rest of the group and ensure that they are adequately supervised.
o Do not move someone with major injuries unnecessarily. Wait for professional assistance.
o Contact the injured person's Emergency Contact/Parent/Guardian
o Complete an incident/accident report. The report should be completed by the main person who dealt with the incident.
o If appropriate, collect and collate statements from witnesses.
